The Importance of Board Service

From women, to Gen Z, and other professionals, more and more groups of people are getting involved in government. One particular way that many are less familiar with is board service. Serving on a board not only will benefit yourself, but it also will benefit the those around you as public input is essential to good government. Board and commission members help to direct policy by making important suggestions and recommendations to elected policymakers and government management. The opportunity gives you tangible experience and participation in local government while also helping to shape and influence critical government decisions and services.

Serving on a board or commission also helps to increase your professional visibility. Government service can garner public visibility, and board work can be instrumental in leveraging your name, especially into an elected position. Many boards work directly with elected officials and policymakers to make evaluative government decisions. Moreover, the expertise, skills, and knowledge that you will gain provides a great way to enter into leadership opportunities and board positions in related fields while also networking with professionals who have the same interests.

The personal expertise that board and commission members gain includes learning leadership, budget, and management skills. Gaining this valuable public experience can be crucial in your future career goals. The Greenville County Legislative Delegation currently has board vacancies in the following areas:
