The Friday 5

If it’s Friday, it’s time for Friday 5, when we highlight interesting articles you may have missed from this week. You skim them, read them, or pass them along to others like you found them yourself. TGIF!

  1. House and Senate committee will begin looking into rates set by utilities, in the aftermath of the VC Summer nuclear shutdown: Speaker of the House Jay Lucas has also petitioned the Public Service Commission to halt current rate hikes to pay for the reactors.
  2. The Statehouse corruption probe takes another odd turn. It’s the gift that keeps on giving for state political reporters.
  3. Whatever happened to those Overtime rules? Looks like the Trump Administration is looking to change or repeal them.
  4. Congratulations to Rosalyn Myers. The Spartanburg city councilwoman won the Democratic primary to replace Rep. Harold Mitchell (D-Spartanburg). She’ll face Republican Mike Fowler in a special election on September 26.
  5. Trying to fit in a last-minute vacation? President Trump’s early childhood home in Queens, New York is going for $725 per night on Air BnB. It was built by his father, Fred Trump, in the 1940’s.

Bonus: Russian President Vladimir Putin was man enough to vacation in Siberia without a shirt … again. Maybe the newly approved sanctions are taking a toll on his wardrobe?
