Happy Friday! Here are a few articles you may have missed this week. Take a few minutes and get smarter before church coffee hour this Sunday…

  1. Senator Hugh Leatherman in hospice care. South Carolina’s most powerful and oldest lawmaker entered hospice care late this week, according to reports. The Senate Finance Chair is an icon in the Statehouse, and we’re sending thoughts and prayers to his family.
  2. SC Ports CEO Announces Retirement. At their annual State of the Port address, Newsome announced he’d be stepping down in mid 2022 after 13 years with the Ports Authority. Barbara Melvin, the Port’s CFO, was named his replacement.
  3. CDC Signs off on Moderna and Johnson & Johnson Boosters. All three COVID-19 Vaccines authorized in the U.S. are now eligible for an additional  booster dose. The announcement is coupled with the authorization that Americans can “mix and match” – allowing them to receive a booster shot different than their original vaccine.
  4. SC Leaders Mourn Colin Powell. The former Secretary of State passed away from complications related to COVID-19 on Monday. The first Black national security adviser, and the youngest and first Black Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was admired by many.
  5. SC’s Mace votes to hold Bannon in Contempt of Congress. The South Carolina Congresswoman from District 1 was one of just six republicans in the House who voted to hold Bannon in contempt, and the only SC Republican to do so.
